ICAN SCHOOL

PRESENTATION OF TEXTBOOKS OF THE SLOVAK LANGUAGE FOR FOREIGN CHILDREN
at the conference "After a year of helping emigrants from Ukraine in education" in Presov
29.03.2023

The iCan language school spoke at the conference "After a year of helping emigrants from Ukraine in education" in Presov and presented its own textbooks for children of foreigners, which are now used by Ukrainian schoolchildren in Slovakia.

The iCan school has been helping Ukrainians since the beginning of the war with continuous programs of free language courses for children and adults. However, our biggest contribution was the project "Slovak language for children of foreigners - a tool for teachers and parents to include children of foreigners in the educational process in the Slovak Republic", supported by UNICEF and Erasmus+. As part of this project, we have developed and printed materials for the iCan language school - books, notebooks, dictionaries and teaching aids for school-age children.
No one knew how much these books, notebooks and methodological materials would be needed in 2022, when a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine would begin. So far, no educational material has been developed for teaching the Slovak language specifically for children of foreigners in Slovakia. We were the first to undertake this work. We started the book development project back in 2018. Our designers, illustrators and teachers have been working on them for four years.
When developing dictionaries and a reference book, we independently involved NIVAM specialists for consultations. Later, representatives of NIVAM turned to us with a request to print our books to help Ukrainian refugee children. Of course, we supported this idea and gave our consent to it. As a result, all schools in Slovakia with children from Ukraine received sets of textbooks and notebooks. We are proud to be able to participate in such assistance.

It is for the result of this project that we received the European Language Brand 2022 award.

We talked about this at the conference "After a year of helping emigrants from Ukraine in education" in Presov.
